All submissions are evaluated in a multi-stage process by a jury comprised of members from different disciplines. Each participant may submit up to six products free of charge. Participation fees are due only if a product is admitted to the competition and presented in the Usability Award exhibition at IFA (for further details please see our Fact Download).
In the first round of evaluation, a pre-selection of up to 50 products is made. These are considered as nominated for the competition and the Usability Award special exhibition during IFA. The nominated companies are requested to submit the selected original products for the Usability Award exhibition in the IFA trade fair halls.
Award Exhibition at IFA / Online Exhibition
The nominated companies are requested to submit the selected original products for the Usability Award exhibition in the IFA trade fair halls. Here, the products are presented to experts, the press and the wider public. On the day before the beginning of the trade fair, the Usability Award online exhibition is released.
During the trade fair, the jury inspects all of the nominated original products included in the Usability Award exhibition in a second evaluation round . It is here that decisions on the awarding of the prizes Usability Award Winner and of the premium prize Usability Award Gold are made. The award winners are announced to the press and public during the fair’s duration.
Public Choice Award
In addition, all nominated products participate over several weeks in an online poll competing for the public selection of the prize Usability Award: Public Choice. The Public Choice Award is assigned every year at the beginning of November. The online poll is connected with social media applications, offering companies the opportunity to communicate their nominated and prize-winning products to the general public. Hence the assignment of the Public Choice Award renews public attention to products that can be particularly recommended shortly before the end of each year.
